Like preventative health, but for architecture – we design buildings that avoid typical problems so they do not eventually become a threat to your family’s health or your property’s value.
Hypostruction
or how we’re building more with less, and what it means for your next home.
Hypostruction (n.) from the Greek hypo for "less" or "under" and the Latin struere for "to build" or "to pile up"; describes our reductionist approach to design: build more with less. We analyze the typical modern home from the inside out and remove everything that appears to be unnecessary, harmful, or susceptible to rapid decay. We find that about 20% of the space inside most homes is lost to voids above the ceiling and inside the walls, and these voids harbor dust, mold, pests, and chemicals that may be harmful to our health.
In practice, our hypostruction homes that have:
No drywall
Accessible plumbing
No AC ducts
Elevated floor slabs
Non-toxic finishes
Solar power
This results in a healthier, more durable, more sustainable, and more spacious home for you and your family.
